Halloween is the easiest holiday to photograph and the hardest holiday to photograph well. Everyone is in costume, the lighting is terrible on purpose, and the best moments happen in dark corners, at strangers' doorsteps, and mid-screech on a dance floor. A Halloween photo scavenger hunt turns all of that into a game: instead of hoping someone catches the party on camera, you give every guest a list of photo challenges worth points.

Here's how it works in three steps. The host writes a challenge list, or takes one of ours below. Guests scan a QR code on the wall or on the front door and the hunt opens in their phone's browser, no app download, no signup. Every photo they submit earns points, the leaderboard updates live, and the best photos can be projected on a screen as the night goes on, which reliably turns a quiet party into a competitive one.

If you're new to the format, our photo scavenger hunt guide covers the rules in depth, and our photo scavenger hunt ideas post has fifty general-purpose challenges for any event. Below are 31 Halloween-specific challenges, one for each day of October, plus how to run the hunt for kids, for parties, and for the office.

Halloween costume photo challenges

Costumes are the low-hanging fruit. These challenges get guests photographing each other instead of standing alone in a corner.

  1. Photograph the scariest costume in the room, with permission
  2. Find a costume nobody can identify and take a photo with its wearer
  3. Get a photo of two strangers in matching costumes who have never met
  4. Photograph the best homemade costume, store-bought ones don't count
  5. Capture a costume in motion: a vampire mid-pounce, a ghost mid-float
  6. Photograph the oldest person present in the youngest costume
  7. Find someone whose costume includes a real pet and photograph the pair
  8. Recreate a famous horror movie poster using guests as the cast
  9. Photograph the most convincing fake wound of the night
  10. Capture the exact moment someone's costume malfunctions (kindly)

Halloween party photo challenges

Party challenges should push guests toward people they don't know yet. That's where the social value is.

  1. Photograph the best dance move performed in a costume that makes it harder
  2. Get a selfie with the host doing something out of character
  3. Find the spookiest decoration in the house and photograph it from below
  4. Capture the carving of the pumpkin, or the moment the candle goes in
  5. Photograph the most impressive snack table before anyone touches it
  6. Find something genuinely old in the house and photograph it like a haunted artifact
  7. Capture a toast where every glass is raised
  8. Photograph the moment the first person screams at a jump scare
  9. Get a photo of the group forming the word BOO with their hands
  10. Capture the mess in the kitchen at midnight

Trick-or-treat photo scavenger hunt for kids

For a kids' hunt, the challenges belong to the adults escorting the group, or to older kids in a supervised group. Keep it simple: each photo is worth one treat-point at the end.

  1. Photograph the best-decorated house on the block
  2. Find a house with a real carved pumpkin, not plastic
  3. Photograph the friendliest dog you meet on the route
  4. Capture the most creative costume worn by another kid
  5. Photograph the group at the start of the night and at the end, same pose
  6. Find a house giving out something that isn't candy and photograph it

Safety rules that make a kids' hunt work: the phone stays with the supervising adult, no photos of other children without their guardian's OK, and the route is agreed before the first doorbell. A photo hunt is a great excuse to keep the group moving between houses, and the photos become the family album of the night without anyone staging one.

Office Halloween photo scavenger hunt ideas

Halloween is the one day a year when the office relaxes on schedule. A lunch-hour hunt works well for team building, see our team building use case page for the facilitation angle.

  1. Photograph the best desk decoration in the building
  2. Find the manager in costume and capture the moment
  3. Photograph two departments collaborating on one photo challenge
  4. Capture the most creative use of office supplies as decoration
  5. Photograph the whole team in costume, arranged by costume height

How do you score a Halloween photo scavenger hunt?

Keep scoring simple enough to explain in one sentence: every completed challenge is worth one point, the best photo of the night as judged by the host is worth three. Announce the winner before the party thins out, around an hour before the planned end. Small prizes work: a bag of candy, a trophy made from last year's pumpkin, or the right to skip one Monday meeting.

How long should a Halloween hunt last?

For a party, run it for the middle two hours of the event, and project the photo wall during the last hour so the game's own photos become the entertainment. For trick-or-treating, the hunt lasts as long as the route does. For an office, 45 minutes at lunch is plenty.

Can you run a Halloween photo scavenger hunt remotely?

Yes. A virtual Halloween hunt uses the same list, but every challenge must be completed inside the player's own home: a decoration, a costume, a pet dressed up. Teams submit photos over a video call while the host keeps score. The costume-challenge list above works for this with almost no changes.
